Back in 2021, a producer I've worked with for years by the name of Ron Connor reached out to me about what it would take to produce an audio drama in regards to equipment and software. After we discussed equipment, several weeks passed and Ron reached out to me about taking part in the process of creating the audio drama. Having excellent experiences with Congo Square in the past, I said yes.
At the time I was remote in South Carolina for a prior gig while most of the cast would be in Chicago and in California. In the end, we shipped all cast members a small recording setup, which included an Audio Technica AT2020, a Focusrite Scarlett Solo, a 10' XLR cable, and a small mic stand for your desk. We had all actors download Audacity on their recording computers and we all got together on Zoom to go over how to record and setup the equipment on their end. We ended up using the Scarlett Solo as an audio interface for us to hear on Zoom what exactly was being recorded. From there we did three days of recording on Zoom with each session we started off with a mic check for volume and making sure there was no distortion. Each session we did several takes of a couple of scenes at a time that way we had multiple options when it came to editing in post. After we finished the recording sessions, we had the actors email me the files they recorded via WeTransfer.
After finishing the recording session, we did several weeks of post-production, where I took the recordings and cleaned them up using IzoTope RX, and I assembled a rough edit of all five episodes. From there, I got together with our director Daniel on Zoom and shared my sessions with him so he can hear what I was working on. After several revisions after adding in foley, sound effects, and musical underscoring we had drafts to share with the producers. After two round of revisions we had our end result that was later streamed to Congo Square's season subscribers.
