Ram's Tale: Folk Tales from Around the World

In the summer of 2020, everyone was out of work and school thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Including myself. Trying to find any work I could, I was eventually contact by my good friend and PRC colleague voice coach Gwendolyn Schwinke about a project that the MFA PATP actors of University of North Carolina were doing involving home recording and folk tales. The goal was for them to produce short stories that could be shared with the children of nearby hospitals in our area as well as to the community at large.

The actors were tasked with finding folk tales from around the world and adapting them into a short story podcast format. I was brought on to help coach them how to record themselves from home to the best of their ability using only their cellphones. Together with the actors and Gwendolyn we taught them how to edit dialogue and comp their own vocal takes into what they felt was their best performance.

From there I took their recordings, did some audio restoration, and helped enhance their recordings to the best of my ability with them only having their cell phones. I then layered in sound design and underscoring in consultation with the actors serving as directors for their respective piece. My goal was to help create something that could allow the children and anyone listening to really place themselves inside of the world of the folk tale. The final result I feel was an enjoyable experience that gave us a positive response from the community and helped inspire joy in a lot of people that needed it during a difficult time.
